A client
recently acquired a site for development. On the site were a number
of Listed Building status barns which needed to be incorporated into
the development. We assessed the buildings and reported on their
structural condition and specified the repair & strengthening works
necessary.
 |
A
Grade II listed masonry building was damaged during restoration
works. The local authority instructed Abacus Design to undertake an
urgent inspection and structural appraisal of the building so as to
remove the immediate danger to public safety and to make
recommendations for the longer term.

Abacus
Design has staff trained to enter confined space areas such as
sealed basements, under-floor voids, and chambers. A confined space
can be defined as an area that has only one entrance and exit route
or where there is a danger to health due to hazardous conditions or
substances.

| Abacus Design has carried out
inspections on historic buildings for a number of clients over the
years. We understand the specific needs of heritage buildings and
the utmost need for sympathetic repairs. Abacus Design typically
produce a report identifying appropriate remedial works and can
subsequently provide site inspection/ project management services
for any repair works.
 |
We are able
to inspect difficult access situations using ‘cherry-pickers’ or
within confined spaces. A recent scheme included the inspection of
an historic pedestrian bridge situated 3 metres above a flowing
river which could not be closed to waterborne traffic. A report was
produced indicating recommendations for short and long-term
repairs.

We are able
to carry out materials testing on concrete framed buildings. Site
tests include cover meter, half-cell and carbonation testing. Abacus
Design are also able to arrange for laboratory testing of concrete
samples taken from site, such as petrographic and chloride testing
so that a comprehensive report providing recommendations for
remedial works can be prepared.
